The new Fireboat Station No. 35 at Pier 22 ½ will be a two-story, approximate 14,800-square-foot floating fireboat station behind the existing fireboat house..

The builders for Fireboat Station No. 35 are Swinerton and Power Engineering Construction Co., who have paired together as a joint venture. They are teamed with Shah Kawasaki Architects and Liftech Consultants Inc. to enhance the success of this landmark project located along the Embarcadero, just north of the Bay Bridge.

The design-build team’s vision is to collaboratively and successfully deliver a resilient floating fire station that will last over half a century, constructed with minimal disruptions to the occupied structure, the public, and surrounding businesses.

The float, which will be held in place by four guide piles, has been engineered to withstand the long-term effects of sea level rise and be relatively impervious to earthquakes. This will allow the new, LEED Gold designed station to rise and fall with the natural tide of the Bay, King Tides and projected Sea Level Rise.

Three fire suppression boats, a dive boat and a marine rescue craft will be moored there. The 100-year-old Engine Company No. 35 will continue to function, but the existing dilapidated Piers 22 1/2 and 24 were demolished as part of the project in 2019.

Funding for this project is provided by the San Francisco Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response (ESER) bond, which passed with 79-percent voter approval in June 2014.
